Interesting story! Brownie just showed up at the pond one day and he never left. He’s not the typical wild mallard duck breed that we get in the summer either. We don’t know where he came from, who he was, why he didn’t leave, he was just there. But because he decided to stay, we just treated him like our own. He was different than the rest of the ducks though, he kept to himself, never bonded with any of the other ducks, never tried to mate with the other ducks or vice versa. In the winter, we always brought our ducks in because we don’t have an all season outdoor enclosure for them yet. And even though Brownie was free to leave whenever, he didn’t. Brownie was always the hardest to catch and the last one to come in for the winter. Libby was surrendered by a family who got the duck as a pet and realized having a pet duck wasn’t what they expected and they could no longer care for him. But because Libby grew up with humans, he was a little bit different then the rest of the ducks and he had no fear. He would just walk straight up to predators, which is why he goes inside the barn every night. When Libby first went to the pond, Brownie was already there, but they didn’t bond or become instant friends. They were pretty much both loners for awhile. It made us sad to see, because we want all our animals to bond, to have friends and to be happy. Luckily, the two started hanging out and now they’re inseparable. They nap together, eat together, walk together, stare at nothing together; it’s the most adorable thing!
