Communication skills really is one of those skills that transform every other area of your life. For me, it helped me find love. Without great communication skills I came across as shy and awkward, and I didn't know how to communicate my value as a man. Not only that, I struggled to find success in my career and businesses, even though I was technically good at what I did. When you pause, it creates a natural break for people to process what you just said. When you're saying something important, and you pause, that signals to people that what you just said is important and it allows them time to process it.

I've helped thousands of people improve their communication skills, and one of the biggest obstacles for them is the idea that changing the way you sound comes across as inauthentic. Please recognise that your voice right now is not your natural voice, it's your habitual voice. Meaning you're just used to one way of speaking. Don't be attached to a series of habits! When you change your voice, you're just learning how to use it in a different way. It's not inauthentic or fake, it's just unfamiliar! This simple reframe will help you approach learning communication skills and changing your voice with more ease! I like to use the metaphor that your voice is a piano with 88 keys. You've been playing with the same 5 keys all your life, and now you're learning how to play other keys on your piano. It's still your instrument! So how can it be NOT you?

Yes. It's possible. Your voice is just a series of behaviors, and behaviors can be changed. This is one of the biggest blockages that prevent people from improving the way they sound, because they believe they're stuck with the way they sound. You aren't stuck, and you can change!

This student of mine asked me a great question... How do you develop your communication skills? Simply put - don't just model one person, pick 3-4 people you admire who you think are great communicators. Copy the way they communicate and overtime as you transform into the future version of you, you'll create your own unique style and flavour of communication. Growing up I was quite emotion-less and I remember working at a theatre, and the teacher at the time called me "stone-face" because I barely showed any emotion. And this led me to having a monotone voice - because a monotone voice comes from a monotone face or body. So if you want to move your voice, you have to move your face! The facial expressions you make will affect the emotion in your voice and therefore move your voice.

If you want to DRAMATICALLY improve your communication skills, then you need to look in the communication mirror. Repeat this 4 step process 10 times and watch yourself transform 🤯

Here's 3 steps to handle questions you don't know the answer to. It's okay in a professional setting to not always know the correct answer - but if you're in a situation where you can't say "I DON'T KNOW" then I would follow these 3 steps. 1. Acknowledge that you don't know 2. Commit to finding the answer 3. Follow up with the answer If that's not professional, I don't know what is! Here's how I actually speak in real life vs on stage. It's all about moving into the right gear for the right situation. The rule of thumb that I follow is: Be as big as the room!
