Im going to miss you all so much. The small part I’ve played in the larger BookTok community, and being able to build our community here has been the highlight of my life. The chaotic livestreams, hanging out with the book club, getting to meet you guys at events, and making incredible so many friends. I know that even if we completely lose this app, many of these things will live on in some form as we move to other platforms, but it wont be the same. And that really hurts. Replying to @Ash (Taylor’s version) 💙🫶🏻 some statistics: in the 2023-2024 school year, there was a 200% surge in school book bans, leading to over 4,231 books being banned in the US (source: PEN America). From Jan-Aug 2024, the ALA reports 414 attempts to censor library materials, challenging 1,128 unique titles. And these arent just school libraries, these are public libraries and academic libraries. The ALA also mentions that instances of “soft censorship” (which refer to when “books are purchased but placed in restricted areas, not used in library displays, or otherwise hidden or kept off limits due to fear of challenges”) arent included/reported, meaning theres possibly even more books affected. #bookban #BookTok #caitsbooks
