Episode 108 of the @Talkin’ Shop Podcast: “My daughter’s coach is a yeller and it’s taking a toll on her love of the game. What should I do?” . It’s difficult to explain to a young player that their coach yells alot and instructs very little - because they are inexperienced and insecure. Is a kid mature enough to show that much empathy while they’re being berated? The fact of the matter is, there’s just a ton of coaches out there who are still LEARNING. Before I had my “Lightbulb moment,” I yelled, and ended careers with my self righteous and toxic tone. Facts. . But there is a life lesson here. Down the road, your child will definitely have coaches, professors, bosses, etc. who don’t match up to their personal taste. Some will simply be UNFAIR and WRONG. It’s inevitable. Can they keep the love for the game ALIVE, while seeing the forest through this TREE (who’s learning how to coach).

Listening to Jim Nantz call golf…is like climbing into a warm bath. Did you know I won the Jim Nantz Soundalike Contest in 2018. Hosted by the Dan Patrick Show. True Story, look it up. Jim called me after the win. We chatted for 14 minutes and 56 seconds. Then he sent me a box of his wine. So I sent him a Coach Ballgame shirt and a picture of my family. What do you notice about these kids? They are supremely ENGAGED. They’re thinking “My coach is fun.” The kid will want to learn MORE from you because you’re FUN. . So coaches, at your next practice: Run some fun skill stations, then bring the group in for a team meeting. Have 2 Assistant Coaches do a staring contest. Then the Atta Boy or Atta Girl Challenge. . It works 100% of the time, every time.
