I was I was searching for a spectacular board of cherry that I could resaw into thick veneer for the front and make a parquet style radial-ish pattern. I wanted something beautiful, but not so excessive that it distracted from the primary function of the space. I found the perfect board it was a unique figured variant known as “ropey cherry”. Rough sawn at 2.125” thick, 14” wide and 12’ long (and very twisted). We were able to get 14 slices, that measured 59” long, 13.5 wide, and finished around .11” thick. More than enough for all of the panels. I didn’t want to use comercial veneer for this project, because it’s just so thin. I needed some thickness to work with for inlaying the brass. It also felt irresponsible to use such thin wood, as this piece is meant to last generations. I can confidently say that all of the veneered panels and doors can be easily sanded and refinished without the risk of blowing through. #designedwithpurpose #baltimore #customfurniture

Quick walk through of the reading table. This thing is loaded with cool features… The built in book lift behind the upholstered trap door, pull out folding step stool, and 30” hidden tray drawer (with a trap door compartment), recessed lighting in apron, the list goes on… If you listen closely you can hear the fit of the doors and the bullet catches. Solid brass knife hinges make the opening tolerances tight. This creates a pressure pocket so the doors won’t slam. (I couldn’t stop playing with it) The door knobs are temporary, I will post an update with the custom ones later. We really pulled out all of the stops to make this piece as magnificent as we could. Finally got to milling this last log and moving everything out. Over 3 tons of wood! Looking forward to making some large tables out of these. Middle sections are very clear straight grain with beautiful medullary rays on the quarter sawn sections.

I got a chainsaw mill! Too much fun…We had a huge storm near here and lost a lot trees. Couldn’t afford to invest in a bandsaw mill yet, but I’ll use this to cut up unique pieces that seem worth it. This is an upper section of a black oak,(similar grain to red oak) 114 years old. This is the smaller of the two 14 foot long sections we cut.
