I was I was searching for a spectacular board of cherry that I could resaw into thick veneer for the front and make a parquet style radial-ish pattern. I wanted something beautiful, but not so excessive that it distracted from the primary function of the space. I found the perfect board it was a unique figured variant known as “ropey cherry”. Rough sawn at 2.125” thick, 14” wide and 12’ long (and very twisted). We were able to get 14 slices, that measured 59” long, 13.5 wide, and finished around .11” thick. More than enough for all of the panels. I didn’t want to use comercial veneer for this project, because it’s just so thin. I needed some thickness to work with for inlaying the brass. It also felt irresponsible to use such thin wood, as this piece is meant to last generations. I can confidently say that all of the veneered panels and doors can be easily sanded and refinished without the risk of blowing through.
