FREE ADVICE👇 (it’s a lot so you’ll have to click to read it all.) Today I taught a hand lettering class at @artsupplywarehouse. There were a lot of people in the class just starting their journey with lettering which made me want to share some of the tips I gave them. First off, anyone and everyone can learn how to letter. There are artists, like myself, who prefer not to gate keep the information on how to letter because it’s brought us so much joy in life. So, if you’re one of those people who love to letter and have been doing it for a while or if you’re one who is just beginning, these tips are for you! Aka, everyone! - Start with Basic Strokes: Practice basic strokes like upstrokes, downstrokes, and curves to build muscle memory. Focus on consistency before moving on to more complex letters. When I first started I would literally bring my marker paper notebook around everywhere I went and I would practice basic strokes all day, every day. I would then practice names and words said in tv shows. Literally, all the time. - Use the Right Tools: Start with a good quality bullet tip marker like the clickart markers from @zebrapen_usa or the bullet tip or their mildliner brush pens. As you progress, experiment with different brush pens like the Fude fine point pen zebra has or the fude medium point brush pen to see which ones feel most comfortable. - Master Letter Spacing: Pay attention to the spacing between letters (kerning) to ensure readability and balance in your designs. Practice making each letter consistent in size and distance. - Don’t Rush: Hand lettering requires patience. Take your time to form each letter carefully and refine your work. Regular practice will lead to noticeable improvement. And keep me posted on how your journey goes!
