When other children have that secure base and safety in their enviroment they are then able to develop in a healthy way. They can focus on themselves and the world. However having a difficult childhood means all of your energy was focused on survival and being able to cope with your enviroment. Things such as school, playing, friends, your sense of self wouldnt have had a chance to properly be explored. Essentialy you were not given the luxury of just being a child. This disconnects you from who you are likley leaving you with a personality built around trauma and keeping yourself safe. In adulthood if you want to heal you have to go back to this hurting part of you and finally give themselves the space to rest and be safe, not always in a state of survival trying to manage the external world. It is about going within to your body and resetting the nervous system so you can let your inner child just live without the constant threats or fear.
