In fact the classic dog walk around the block that is so accepted as an every day thing isn’t that common in my dog’s daily routine! It’s because there’s so many other more fulfilling things that you could do with your dog! Instead of sticking to same old boring routine…try a few of these ideas! SHOULD YOU LURE YOUR DOG? If you want to build precision in your dog’s behaviour, then YES! However, it’s worth noting that luring isn’t always the best option. In situations you don’t really care about precision and you want the dog to learn a behaviour quickly, shaping can often be a better option! For example, I rarely use luring for a pet dog learning loose leash skills. If you’re really wanting to get into dog sports then precision is a priority. In that case most behaviours I’m going to start off luring! Luring allows me to ensure the behaviour is super precise and I can slowly build the picture I want. The drawback is it can take a lot longer but the results are worth it in my opinion! Bonus tip: I often build the precision with a food lure and build the power and intensity with a toy. Only start to bring in the toy (tug, ball etc) once the dog understands the behaviour thoroughly! #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice #DogTraining #dogsport #germanshepherd

Targeting and Marker clarity! Here I’m working on Sage being able to switch between focus on me and focus on a target (the ball)! I’m also making sure she understands when I use a direct marker (yes) vs her indirect marker (chip!). When I use my direct and indirect is dependant on her behaviour! If she’s struggling for focus on me, I’ll load up the direct to ensure she sees more value in engaging with me. If she’s struggling to look at the target I’ll load more on the indirect marker (the reward on the ground) so she focuses on that more intently! Don’t annoy your dog when they are eating…ever. Seriously, you’re only annoying them and they probably think you’re a 🤡. Resource guarding is heavily genetic…meaning that if you did the thing I said not to with your puppy and they aren’t resource guarding…it’s probably genetics, not your training. Instead, teach them that if you approach good stuff happens..they get their favourite treat! Consider this: would you like to sit next to someone at the dinner table who constantly prods you and takes your food? No. I’d definitely like to sit next to someone who brings me better food as they come to the table though!
