On World Suicide Prevention Day September 10th and through this month, Movember, a charity dedicated to changing the face of men’s health, is urging men to talk about their mental health issues and challenges as part of their “Spot the Signs” campaign. It’s not always easy to reach out when things get tough, but meaningful conversations early can reduce the risk of suicide. As a man who's personally felt the effects of mental health challenges, I know how difficult it can be in a world that discourages men from speaking about feelings due to how it is perceived as 'less manly'. In my culture, sharing and letting the tears flow is healing. It is seen as strength and not weakness, and we should focus on these teachings and not the stereotype that expression of emotions is weakness. #worldsuideperventionday #spotthesigns #helpinghand #caring

I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff and grew up in chaos. I grew up way to fast. I remember my mom always telling me from a young age, “son you know too much for your age”. When you grew up in unstable environments you have no choice other than to grow up fast. It stems from the residential school system and mistreatment and trauma. Their mission “kill the Indian in the child”. They say trauma stays in the DNA. They elders say its going to take 7 generations to heal from trauma cause by the residential school. My message to my fellow Indigenous brothers and sisters. Be kind to yourself. Healing starts with you. You can be the cycle breaker. Being a cycle breaker is important work and theres many of us here right now trying to navigate. You can be the healing starting point for your family and relations that are to come in the future. I know this because my kids didn’t grow up seeing the things I did. It doesn’t not mean they were completely shielded from the effects as I’m still and will always be healing for the rest of my life. This post isn’t to discredit anyone’s beliefs. I believe everyone is entitled to do as they please as long as it’s not harmful to anyone. I love and miss my grandma and it’s time I go pay her a visit.
