One of your top comments for Virgin-Voting has been to make sure to look into the down-ballot races that I’ll be voting for. “Down-ballot” means the federal, state and local offices, as well as ballot measures, that have a big impact on our daily lives beyond the President. This is the really empowering part of our voting journey – it’s a chance to maximize the power of our votes for the benefit of our local communities. 🙌🏿 To help us get in the know, I asked Janai Nelson, the President of the Legal Defense Fund (a group that works year-round to defend and advance the full dignity and citizenship of Black people in America) to share more with us on why these races are so important to address on your ballot, and how to do some research before you place your vote! 🗳️ Shout-out to everyone who has already voted, and to all of you leaving your tips in comments - I’M VERY PROUD OF US!! 🫶🏿🫶🏿🫶🏿 BALLOT RESEARCH TIPS FROM @NAACP Legal Defense Fund: *Though presidential, senate and congressional elections often receive the most attention, the many state and local elections taking place across the US — which will decide who serves as judges, mayors, sheriffs, school board members, and more — will also have far-reaching effects on the lives of millions of people for many years to come. *Find the races and ballot measures on which you’ll be voting by entering your address into the sample ballot generator at LDF.vote. *Several nonpartisan online resources (such as Ballotpedia.org or Vote411.org) will provide you with a comprehensive look at local election candidate information, like a candidate’s backgrounds, beliefs, and stances on policies. Many of these resources also offer background information on possible ballot questions, such as amendments to state constitutions. *Some websites may have more comprehensive information for your desired locality, candidate, or issue than others, it is best to use multiple sources to gain as much insight as possible.
