Many of you know that our beloved 15-year-old dog, Lilo, lost the use of her back legs this past Friday morning. This has been especially challenging for us, as she was diagnosed with diabetes in April, leading to significant vet bills. To help support her care, I’m holding a raffle for a $400 tattoo gift card, which can be used towards a new tattoo or divided as needed. Tickets are priced at $10 each, 3 for $20, or 20 for $100. If we don’t reach the full amount, the gift card will match whatever we raise. Here’s three things you NEED if you want to be a tattoo artist 1.) You need a mentor that will take the time week after week to teach you the skills and techniques you will need to pull off banger tattoos! They should be hands on and willing to show you these things. 2.) You need to be able to take constructive criticism. As artists the best way we grow is through critique. You should always be open to listening to what other artists may have to say that’s constructive and can improve your art. The answer is almost always “more black” IYKYK 3.) You need to know the foundations of art. Composition will translate from paper to skin in ways of fitting the piece to a body part instead of a square or rectangular canvas. Depth will help you develop your tattoos from looking flat to jumping off the skin. Knowing your color theory will help your designs pop and draw the eye around the piece and contrast will keep your image clean and readable from a distance as well as give your piece depth. Here are 3 things you need to look for in a potential mentor or shop when seeking an apprenticeship! 1.) The shop you choose should be someplace you yourself would want to get tattooed in. A clean and professional environment will set the tone for your clientele as well as the vibe for where you’ll be learning. 2.) The mentor you choose is possibly the most important part of your tattoo journey. Make sure you choose someone who inspires you. The artist you decide to learn from should not only have clean and crisp tattoos but a good set up to keep their books organized. 3.) Make sure that the person you choose has time for you!! If you’re at the shop more then your mentor that’s a huge 🚩🚩! If your mentor isn’t asking you to draw or practice on fake skin you should be asking for assignments. On that same topic your mentor should encourage you to watch them tattoo and ask questions! If they get mad at you asking questions that’s also a 🚩🚩🚩.
