After a decade of displacement in IDP camps, hundreds of Yazidi families have returned to their homeland in Sinjar, with many more on their way. These families are coming back to homes that were looted and destroyed by ISIS in 2014. Despite some notable progress in restoring infrastructure and basic services, the community still requires substantial support from the Iraqi government and the international community to rebuild their homes, restore their livelihoods, and access employment opportunities. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Kocho Massacre, one of the darkest moments of the Yazidi Genocide. Listen to survivors recount their harrowing stories of a period that has left an indelible mark on the Yazidi community and contemporary history. *** Ten years ago, Nadia’s home village of Kocho was torn apart by unthinkable atrocities. On August 15, 2014, after two weeks under siege, ISIS unleashed a brutal, systematic campaign of executions and enslavement on the Yazidi people of Kocho. Today, Kocho remains largely in ruins. A new cemetery stands as a reminder of the lives lost to some of the most horrific acts in living memory – but many of the graves remain empty, as the community waits for the remains of their loved ones to be exhumed and identified. A decade on, the trauma of what transpired in Kocho still resonates. Yet, amidst the suffering, the Yazidi community continues to fight for justice, planting seeds of hope in the soil of their homeland. Survivors of the Yazidi genocide have been living a nightmare for 10 years. Whether they had to endure thirst and starvation on Sinjar mountain, were kidnapped by ISIS, or were otherwise displaced, the impact of the genocide is still felt among the Yazidi community. Survivors cannot truly begin to heal until the international community and the government of Iraq help them achieve justice. Rescuing Yazidis still in captivity, identifying and returning the remains of victims, and holding perpetrators accountable are all necessary actions that need to be taken to support survivors. Thousands of Yazidis and supporters gathered on August 3rd at the Yazidi Genocide Memorial to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide. The event was a collective, unified effort by the Yazidi community, with input from survivors, families of victims, and other members of Yazidi civil society. It was tribute to the victims of the genocide and the resilience of survivors; a moment for remembrance; and an opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to the pursuit of justice.
