Dr. Martin Luther King, born in Atlanta, GA to Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr., and Alberta W. King. Martin was a man of Peace, Love, and Service. He’s know for being a leader of the American civil rights movement. He organized a number of peaceful protests as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, including the March on Washington in 1963. He is recognized for his nonviolent resistance, his “I Have a Dream” speech, and his many marches and boycotts. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his nonviolent fight for civil rights and racial justice for Black Americans. Mother Rodessa Barrett Porter of the legendary Barrett Sisters; passed away December 16, 2024, at the age of 94. The Barrett Sisters were an electrifying international act, anchored by Delois Barrett Campbell’s extraordinary range. She sang most of the leads, but Ms. Porter, the youngest, and Billie Barrett GreenBey, the middle sister, were potent soloists, too. The three of them had grown up listening to the Andrews Sisters on the radio and modeled themselves after them. There is nothing, they often said, quite like sisters harmonizing.If the mission of gospel music is evangelism, the Barrett Sisters surely must have been responsible for more than a few converts. Their smiles were beatific. His experience spans decades, including working with several premier funeral homes in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and South Florida. He received the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, Georgia, and the Master of Divinity from Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia, and the Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California. He was awarded the Doctor of Divinity from the United Theological Seminary and Bible College in Monroe, Louisiana. His call to the Gospel ministry afforded him many opportunities to serve. He was greatly helped and encouraged by Zion Baptist Church of Brunswick, Georgia and the Trinity Baptist Church of Fort Valley, Georgia. He pastored the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Cairo, Georgia for seven and half years. On August 16, 1979, Dr. Hope was called to serve the Ebenezer Baptist Church West in Athens, Georgia. As the visionary pastor for 40 years, he implemented many new ministries for children, youth, adults including Worship on Wednesday for the homeless, the Community Ministry Center a 501c3 to help the needy and the University of Georgia Foster Student/Parent Program to provide a home away from home for students attending the University of Georgia. Two teenage girls were arrested this week in connection to the death probe of a 13-year-old in South Carolina, authorities say. The victim, identified as Ka'Niyah Baker, was reported missing on Jan. 12, police said. Her body was found in an abandoned home following a fire in the Capital Heights neighborhood a few days later, police said. “Brutal, heinous, vicious, gruesome, monstrous and disturbing," Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said at a press conference on Saturday. "These are the words I use to describe this murder investigation." Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said the identifying process was difficult because the victim suffered severe trauma to her head, face, and body. They used DNA from her clothing from her foster home and dental records to confirm her identity. Rutherford added that Baker was "bludgeoned, stabbed, and burned." The incident is under investigation. She was wanted by the Department of Juvenile Justice due to cutting off her ankle monitor. The second teen arrested was a 15-year-old girl. Both suspects have been classified as frequent runaways and high school dropouts. According to WIS, officials are pushing to charge the teenagers as adults. Speaking to USA TODAY, University of South Carolina Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor Hayden Smith said the case indicates there was presence of underlying trauma for all three girls involved.
