So pleased to say Shelby went out on her first free fly today. It has been nearly a year since she was last out flying. I wanted to spend the last 12 months really working on getting her health back up as she was in a terrible way last year. Unfortunately flying does exasperate her condition (she has aspergillosis) and causes pain, so with flying comes increased plucking, therefore I will not be flying her as frequently as the other two birds, however exercise is obviously extremely important for her with her condition so it was imperative that I got her back free flying once her pain and the spread of the disease was under control. She loved her first fly outdoors, and it was like she had never had a break. It honestly blows my mind how resilient macaws are, and it was so good to see her with so much skill and fitness still, even after all this time. The fly was short despite her being capable of more, as I don’t want to push her into pain again, but also, she didn’t go near a single tree and so I wanted to end the fly before that habit set itself in stone again!
