Do you feel like your musical theatre sound still has a classical quality to it? Here are the main culprits I see in lessons with my students: 1. Not enough firm vocal fold closure/too much air flow! This could result in either a breathy sound or a really light mix and trouble finding your belt/chest dominant mix. 2. Too much legato! You’ve been trained to “sing on the vowels” and hold each note to its full value but in MT and contemporary styles, you’ll place way more emphasis on speech-quality singing. 3. Vocal tract shaping! Most likely your vowels are very tall/rounded, soft palate lifted, larynx lowered, etc. Play around with different VT shapings that feel closer to your regular speech patterns with divergent vowels. Think megaphone out📢 4. You aren’t grounded in the character in a realistic way. Start thinking of yourself as an actor! Get really specific and detailed in who the character is, what the problem is, and what they do to solve it. If you want to learn how to do any of this, come sign up for a sample lesson!
