Death plays a very important role in ‘The Conductor’s Tale’ - in fact he’s one of the main characters!! I don’t want to give too much away other than to say that writing his character was one of my favourite parts of the book. Constructing a character who is human, with feelings and aims and motivations and a backstory of their own - rather than just a spectre - was lots of fun. Tales the novel - ‘The Conductor’s Tale’ - is out now - there’s more info in my profile :) Full passage: The steps were measured and heavy. We eyed each other in wordless suspense. Everybody knew who - what - was coming. The door swung open to reveal a figure in black, flowing robes, its face hidden beneath a hood. We all recoiled because Death clutched a gigantic scythe in his bony hand, the blade impossibly sharp and glittering in the sunlight. He eyed each of us in turn, his gaze freezing my blood into ice until he looked away, turning to Serena. I saw her flinch, the colour draining from her face. “Well well” said Death. His voice didn’t have the deep, booming timbre I expected. Death spoke in a distinctly human tone that put me a little at ease. “Is this…” said Serena hesitantly “We’re sorry to bother you but…is this your house?” “This is where I grew up” said Death, leaning his scythe against the wall. He pulled a chair from under the table and sat down, groaning as though finally slowing down after a long day. “Naturally, I do not receive many visitors so you’ll have to excuse me if I’m a poor host. Sit down, if you like.” Since Death occupied the only chair, we were left to sit on the wooden floor like school children gathering around a teacher. I gazed up at him in silent awe but Death appeared more exhausted than threatening. He reclined in his seat, his long robes flowing across the floor and that enormous scythe glinting behind him. “You know, it was once just a plain old garden scythe” said Death, following my eyes “Used for cutting down weeds, not people. Excuse me. As I said I am not used to company. I have no idea how to say things that don’t horrify my guests. In fact, I really have no idea what to say at all.”
