Climate change has just claimed 9,000 homes and structures in the historically Black town of Altadena, CA. The news cycle has moved on, but the disaster hasn’t… Many of Altadena’s longstanding residents are Black families who have managed to build generational wealth through homeownership (81% of Altadena’s Black residents own their own homes, which is double the national average). As these families return to the charred remains of their homes and businesses, many are asking: how will this tight-knit community rebuild, and what impact will this disaster have on Altadena’s legacy of Black culture, history, and security? One thing is certain: when we lose everything, we shouldn’t be on our own. We deserve a government that shows up for our communities in times of crisis – not just in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, but in the long, expensive process of rebuilding. We deserve a government that holds fossil fuel billionaires accountable for the decades they have spent deceiving the public and buying out politicians, which they always knew would cause climate change (and which they also knew would make them rich). At any moment, climate change could rip apart the lives and the communities we each hold dear. Make polluters pay for their damages at smvmt.org/makethempay
