Celebrating is a privilege, but in Brazilian culture, it’s also a tradition — so when I told my mom I only wanted to do a small cake and balloons with Dave and Axel for Axel’s first, she got on the first flight to put something together and bring the family together. Growing up, I remember my parents working overtime, just to throw us birthday parties — I used to think it was because they felt the cultural pressure, but I sat on this after Axel’s first and realized… they did it for the memories. At 33, I remember just about every birthday party, the different themes and experiences. They’re core memories now. Needless to say, it’s not about how grand the party is, but about the special moments and time put in that make them memorable. Whether you DIY it out of cardboard and paper, or hire someone to decorate for you, creating new experiences is what will create those core memories — and THAT is what matters.
