Chickens really love forage and I have a lot of acorns from my bur oak trees. The pigs get the majority, but I share with the chickens as well. I crack the acorns open by hand, but its easier for most people with a hammer. I open the acorns before giving them to the chickens because they cant open them like the pigs can. Acorns are loaded with nutrients and healthy fats, giving your flock an energy boost. Keeping their diet balanced is key, so I only feed them about 5% to 10% of their diet. This amount is perfectly safe and wonβt cause any issues, and especially for me because the bur oaks naturally have less tannins. If you overfeed acorns without leaching them, they can turn the egg yolks green and make the eggs taste off. When gathering, look for loose, unblemished acorns on the ground. The ones with the caps usually have weevils and can be rotten. Collect some acorns, and watch your chickens enjoy a healthy treat! π°ππ
