When puppies are bored, are having trouble settling, or getting into trouble (ie. More chewing, biting, barking, etc.) providing more mental stimulation to give them a productive outlet to release that excess energy will make a huge difference. AND it will help them settle easier in their crate when it’s time for them to go back in. The time you spend with your puppy before work and after work is crucial if you’re away from them for the majority of the day. Get those training sessions in before and after and be extra tight on the potty schedule when you are home with them. We highly recommend enlisting some help and having someone be able to come check in on your puppy throughout the day to be able to check on them, take them out, and interact with them. Boundary frustration is something puppies can experience when they see you and can’t get to you! If your puppy is barking a lot from the playpen, this could be one of the reasons. You will also want to make sure you’ve done things like: potty opportunity, walk/training session, etc. and aren’t accidentally petting them when they’re “demanding” it. If all these points check off, you may just not have playpen puppy. That’s ok! Try tethering with a Place cot or dog bed as an alternative to supervised separation.
