Remembering Shirley Temple today, April 23, 1928 – February 10, 2014. Shirley began her film career in 1931 when she was three years old. The Academy created the Academy Juvenile Award specifically for the 7-year-old, who was given the award for “her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.” In addition to her film career, Shirley became an American diplomat. She served as US Ambassador to Ghana from 1974 to 1976, Chief of Protocol of the United States from 1976 to 1977, and US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992. “I’ve led three lives: the acting part, wife and mother — which is a career — and international relations,” she said in a 1998 interview with The Washington Post. “I’m proud of my career, the first one, and I’m proud of the other two, too.” Shirley passed at age 85 on February 10, 2014, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Shirley was a lifelong cigarette smoker but avoided displaying her habit in public because she did not want to set a bad example for her fans. . .
