Growing up without my mother because of her addiction left me with a lot of bitterness. Mothers play such a major role in a child’s life, and there were so many moments I wished I could turn to her. Instead, I leaned on other family members like my grandmom and my aunts, who stepped up in incredible ways. But no matter how much they did for me, they still weren’t my mom. For a long time, I struggled to understand addiction. It wasn’t until I started Empowering Cuts and began traveling the country that I gained a deeper perspective. While providing free haircuts, I would ask individuals questions about their struggles with addiction. Their stories gave me insight into a battle I had never personally faced, and it helped me see things in a way I never could before. After years of distance, my mother and I eventually rekindled our relationship. I forgave her and committed myself to supporting her in any way I could, as long as she was willing to accept the help. My door has always been open for her. Today is a good day. She’s been admitted into a treatment facility, and I’m hopeful she will continue on the path of sobriety. I’m sharing this because if you love someone who’s battling addiction, I urge you: don’t give up on them. They need your patience, love, and hope, even when it’s hard. Keep believing in them, you might be the one thing that keeps them going 🥺♥️
