Let’s talk Dopamine Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that acts as a chemical messenger in the brain. It helps regulate mood, motivation, focus, and the brain’s reward system. In kids with ADHD, dopamine levels or receptor activity may differ, which can contribute to challenges with attention, impulse control, and completing tasks. ➡️ Kids with ADHD often engage in behaviors that seek to boost dopamine levels in their brains. Because their dopamine systems may not function at typical levels, they naturally gravitate toward activities or actions that provide immediate stimulation or reward. These behaviors can sometimes appear impulsive, hyperactive, or even risky, but they’re often an unconscious attempt to regulate their brain chemistry. Hyperfixation in kids with ADHD is closely linked to dopamine regulation in the brain. When a child hyperfixates, they intensely focus on an activity or interest, often for hours, because it provides a significant dopamine “hit,” temporarily satisfying their brain’s need for stimulation and reward. For Payton, fishing is that activity for Payton which is so surprising to me because it takes A LOT of patience. He will sit out there all day trying to catch fish and learning about the ones he catches. It’s so good to be able to see him outside and enjoying nature while getting that natural dopamine hit.
