The first of many videos sharing the breakdown of the secret cosplay I was working on for NCC prelims☺️! When I first began to work on the final pieces for Robbie, the first piece of this cosplay I had completed were Robbie’s hair-sticks, so it feels fitting to make it my first progress video! My goal for this cosplay was to incorporate the traditional aspects of his design and lean into them when it came to making certain pieces for this cosplay. So I decided I would attempt wood whittling for the hair sticks. When looking at traditional Japanese hairsticks, they are usually rounded with no hard edges and typically feature decorative flowers made from silk. There’s more to it than that and the history of them, but that’s the very basic appearance. Robbie’s hairsticks featured hard edges and no decorative elements aside from 2 grooves on the thicker ends. I wanted to maintain the straight and uniform shape his hairsticks had..so I ended up looking into ways to achieve that. Eventually, I came across “chopstick” jigs. Which were used as a guide to be able to carve down wood to make uniform chopsticks. After watching several breakdowns on how to make a jig (all of them involving heavy machinery I do not own 😅) - I designed mine in Blender based off those breakdowns and what elements are needed for a good jig. I came up with my own sizing and shapes for it- making sure the dimensions would achieve what I wanted for Robbie’s hairsticks. Once printed, I could start making the final hairsticks! This took a lot of time and patience, and I tried to use wood whittling techniques like push cuts for most of it. (I may look like I am struggling in the video..and that is because I probably was, but that’s mainly due to my finger joints being the way they are😅). The wood I used probably could’ve been softer to make whittling easier, but it became a little easier once I worked it down to the final shape. After lots of sanding to clean it up, I painted and sealed it with a matte varnish. The paint colour I mixed to match the red/orange of the rest of my cosplay!
