Part 1 of some guidelines to try when a person seems to have “incoherent speech.” And we put that in quotes because it’s not incoherent to them, it’s that we can’t always understand it. We want to normalize different ways of communicating. These options can help you start to understand what they are trying to tell you. This is part 1 in a series of different options you can try. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving

Most people blame dementia for this aggression, but it’s not really the dementia. There is so much we can do to help! There are 6 areas of Objective Observation that we teach in our courses, and the CCDCG Certification for Professionals course is open for enrollment now. Comment “professional” for the link. We also have our Care Partners House membership for family care partners. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
When we are told to pass off “babbling” language as “just dementia” and there isn’t anything to do about it, we decrease a persons agency, dignity, and ability to communicate. Different communication aids like this are very helpful. There is a process to creating them and using them with someone, which you do need to learn. You can try just printing out some photos, but if it doesn’t work, then that probably means your person needs more of the accessible process to be able to sue them. Which we teach to families in the Care Partners House membership and to Professional carers in our Professionals course. You can join the membership any time and the next professionals course group starts Jan. 20, 2025. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving

Did you know dementia falls under the neurodivergent umbrella? What we teach is helpful for people who are neurodivergent in many ways, and we use the principles in our own life, as you can see here. Even in dementia, we find that providing the supports needed to let someone do things themselves, even if it takes longer, not only decreases anger and fear, but often leads to increased or slower loss of independence. Sometimes you don’t have the time to let your person do a task, and that’s okay. Other times though, consider if it’s an okay time to have your person do the task. If your person seems to not be able to do any tasks or no matter what you do there are certain tasks they can’t do, then learning more about the Montessori care method can help. Often when my clients show me how they are assisting with the task, there are just a few changes we make to make the task accessible for their person with dementia again. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorlivingcommunity #seniorliving #montessorilife #neurodivergent
You can trigger the brain to do something by the exact items you use. We don’t do things with items that don’t appeal to us. ⭐️Appealing items increase motivation and even dopamine. They are a way to help the brain WANT to do something! A Montessori principle is that materials (things we use) need to be appealing to the person. For example, journaling is great for people with dementia to help decrease agitation and confusion. 👀But we see many places give people spiral bounds kids school notebooks and number 2 pencils or disposable pens. ❗️To most people those items not only are not visually or tactilely appealing, BUT they are also not associated with calm, reflection, and self care- they are usually associated with work or school and judgement or deadlines. ❗️ ✴️ Plus, if that type of paper and pen are not kinds they like or used as a kid (due to regressive memory) they may not even see those items as a real pen! For me, Katie, I love fountain pens. Using them and seeing them increases the motivation to do things like journaling or even my to-do list. If I get dementia and you want to set up journaling for me, it better be with a fountain pen. Not only do I like them, but it’s part of who I am. The exact items we give people (and ourselves) can either allow them to do something, or stop them from doing something. Here is some general information to help understand how to handle when you disagree with a decision your person with dementia has made. This is for informational use only. This is not legal or medical advice. You must work with your own lawyer and doctor to know what is right for your person and their legal right and yours. From the non-legal and non-medical side of care, one thing you can start doing is building trust with them so you know what they want and you can be more of a team going forward. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
If your person repeats single words or you can’t tell what they are saying, try this for more focused interactions. It helps cue the brain so they are less confused and they have something to talk to you about. I’m not a fan of calling this “babbling” speech because just because we can’t understand what they are saying, it doesn’t mean they are babbling, which is defined as: “the action or fact of talking rapidly and continuously in a foolish, excited, or incomprehensible way.” The words are not coming out as they want them to, but it’s not foolish or incomprehensible. In Montessori care we teach how to understand different forms of speech instead of just passing this off as “that’s just dementia.” #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
Edit: a kind commenter let me know that the blind community would like us to use the other term for this, time agnosia, which makes total sense! I’m so sorry I did not register the ableism in this term, and will change it going forward. Thanks to community educating each other!! I appreciate it. —-This also repeatedly shows my brain that the task really only takes 5-10 minutes. Not the “forever” that my brain assumes and feels every time I do the dishes without something else to also focus on or to create a time barrier for me. From the Cleveland Clinic article: “Time blindness” refers to the inability to recognize when time has passed or to estimate how long something will take.“ It’s not a diagnosis or medical term, but rather a descriptive term for this phenomenon that happens to everyone, but is often far more prominent in people who are neurodivergent such as with ADHD or dementia. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving #neurodivergent #timeblindness #adhd #adhdlife #adhdlifehacks

Montessori care works because it’s a whole different philosophy that has people with dementia engaging in normal life. I go in and do special Montessori activities, like how in our own lives we might go to choir or take an art class or have a game night with friends sprinkled throughout our week. And in full Montessori care the whole day uses Montessori principles which means people are cooking, cleaning, volunteering, visiting with friends, doing laundry, and people can do these things with a lot of independence because Montessori makes these things accessible. When people are supported in living an everyday life, that’s when we just don’t see most of the common behaviors we are told are “just dementia.” #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
I tried to answer in the 1:30 allotted time! I hope this quick answer helps. The second half of this question was does our course teach how to do this in different settings, and the answer is yes! I have taught this to care community professionals (facilities), people who work in hospitals, and in home health care. Actually, home health is a speciality of mine and working in the home is different than in a facility. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #Montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
