Under the Big Sky: Immookspoom Before it was called Montana, this land was known as Immookspoom—Big Sky, our home. As Amskapi Piikani, we are the original caretakers of this land, our ancestors walking these rolling plains, river valleys, and mountain ridges with purpose and respect. Under the expansive sky, they understood balance, the interconnectedness of all life, and the responsibility to nurture and protect this sacred place. Today, that same sky stretches over us as a reminder of who we are and where we come from. It carries the songs of our elders, the prayers of our ceremonies, and the wisdom of siiksaakaa (ancient knowledge). Under this sky, we continue to uphold our teachings, honor the land, and build a future rooted in our PiikaniPaitaapiisinii—the Blackfeet way of life. This isn’t just our history; it’s our present and future. We are still here, carrying the strength and resilience of our ancestors in every step. As stewards of Immookspoom, we rise to preserve our language, culture, and community while inspiring others to reconnect with their own roots and responsibilities to this earth. Under this Big Sky, may we always remember: we are not just part of the land; we are the land. We are Amskapi Piikani.
