Q&A: Working With a Bit-Shy Horse Professional Clinician Jeff Davis answers: This horse was always a little difficult about accepting the bit, but now he is really refusing the bit. He clamps his lips shut, and if we get through his lips, he clamps his teeth shut as well. He’s good at lowering his head, but he just won’t open his mouth. In an effort to make opening his mouth easy and shutting his mouth difficult, every time he clamps his teeth shut, we back him up, marching fast, and then stop and try the bridle again. Each time he refuses the bit, we march him backwards again. It usually takes about 10 rounds of this before he opens his mouth and accepts the bit. His teeth are good, we have had the dentist out. And the bit is a gentle snaffle. Are we on the right track or is there a better way?
