Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed the backlash over casting a cis actor to play a transgender character in season two of his hit-show. Hyun-ju, played by cisgender man Park Sung-hoon, is a trans character that joins the deadly competition because she needs money for her gender-affirming surgery. In a new interview with TV Guide that dropped on December 17, Dong-hyuk said he “wanted an authentic casting of a trans actor,” however said it was “near impossible” to find an openly trans Korean actor. “When we researched in Korea, there are close to no actors that are openly trans, let alone openly gay, because unfortunately in the Korean society currently the LGBTQ community is rather still marginalized and more neglected, which is heartbreaking,” Dong-hyuk told the interviewer. Discrimination against LGBTQ individuals is widespread in South Korea, where same-sex marriage remains illegal.
