It’s normal that your portions will increase with time after bariatric surgery!⁣ ⁣ In the beginning, you might be full off protein alone! ⁣ ⁣ As time goes on you will be able to eat more… don’t be afraid of this. Your body NEEDS the nutrients!⁣ ⁣ Some of you might even be looking at this thinking that your snack plates are double the size of the largest one.. and that’s ok too!⁣ ⁣ Clients come to me with this fear all the time. Afraid because they can eat more than others, afraid because they don’t have this intense restriction like they thought they would, fearful that they won’t be successful ⁣ ⁣ I promise, just because your portions increase does 𝗻𝗼𝘁 mean that your surgery is broken, you won’t be successful or that you will gain all of your weight back⁣ ⁣ You can lose weight without feeling like you should only eat protein⁣ ⁣ You can build balanced plates and incorporate a variety of foods without gaining all of your weight back⁣ ⁣ You can be successful long-term without being on another “eat like a bird” diet ⁣ ⁣ There’s no right or wrong with your portions, focus on the QUALITY of how you choose to fill them💗⁣ ⁣ In my coaching program, I teach you exactly how to create progressions like this depending on where you’re at on your journey post-bariatric surgery to fuel your body properly, give it the nourishment it needs and lose weight 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 restriction! ⁣ ⁣ I am currently enrolling new clients! Did my pouch stretch? The dreaded question. As your new pouch expands after surgery it may seem like you can eat a lot more than you used. The pouch can usually handle around 1 cup of food at a time about 1 year after surgery. But it also depends on the types of food being eaten If someone asks me if it’s possible for the stomach to stretch after surgery (more than expected), I tell them yes but it is not common. Here is what I would suggest doing if you are concerned that your stomach has stretched. 1) Make sure you are eating protein first. This may help signal to the brain earlier that you are satisfied. 2) Eat 3-5 oz protein per meal. Make sure at least half of your portion sizes are protein. If you do this it helps to stick to the 1 cup portion sizes. 3) Don’t drink fluids with meals. Alright, out of all these recommendations this one has the least amount of science behind it but it is believed the liquid helps liquify your food faster so the food contents can empty from your the stomach faster. Hence, being able to eat more and being hungrier sooner. It’s worth doing if you are concerned. 4) Avoid slider foods. These foods such as crackers, chips, or ice cream tend to be calorie dense but don’t fill you up so you can eat a lot. You will likely be able to eat more than a cup portion of these foods. 5) Journaling helps you learn so much about your body. Keep track of what you are and how your hunger level felt afterwards. Maybe certain food combination keep you fuller longer. Plus, this journal will come handy for your surgery team to review. Schedule an appointment with your surgery team. If you have tried all of the above suggestions and they don’t help then it may be helpful to see your surgery team. They can order tests to make sure everything is in working order.
