Statistics show the average lifespan of a police officer after retirement is just 5 to 7 years. I’ve got 3 years and some months left until retirement, and I’m determined to beat those odds. When I graduated the police academy, I was 160 pounds. But boredom eating on patrol quickly got me up to 245 pounds. A large pizza for lunch, wings, and snacks were normal for me. I now realize how these eating habits paired with the constant stress, elevated heart rate, and lack of movement in this job likely contribute to that post retirement stat. One day, your heart’s working overtime, and the next, you retire and it’s still. That’s a dangerous shift. For these last few years, I’m focusing on winding down, eating healthier, and staying active outside the job. This is my progress so far. I’m open to tips and suggestions to keep improving. Let’s beat these stats together. Thanks for watching!
