My parents were made to be grandparents. In 2025 I decided I wanted to share more. More family moments, more of my culture and recipes, more real life. If you’re Italian, happy Befana! In Italian culture, she is a witch who was visited by the 3 Wise Men and invited on their journey to give a gift to the king who was born (Jesus). She initially declined, due to the fact she was too busy cleaning her house, but then changed her mind and decided to try to follow after them. She of course was too late to give him a gift and couldn’t find him, so instead she visits all children while they sleep and leaves them gifts from her basket because she never knows which one might be the baby king. It’s a tradition I grew up with and it’s just so sweet sharing a part of my culture with my littles 🥹. #befana #nonna #italians #italian

La Befana: The Beloved Italian Christmas Tradition In Italian folklore, La Befana is a cherished figure who plays a central role in the Christmas season, particularly on Epiphany Eve (January 5th). Often depicted as a kind, old woman flying on a broomstick, she delivers gifts and sweets to children who have been good throughout the year—or lumps of coal to those who haven’t. Think of her as Italy’s version of Santa Claus, but with a distinctly magical and maternal twist. The Legend of La Befana The story of La Befana is tied to the journey of the Three Wise Men. According to legend, the Magi stopped at her home on their way to Bethlehem, seeking shelter for the night. They invited her to join them in their quest to honor the newborn Christ child, but she declined, saying she had too much housework. Regretting her decision later, she set off to find the Magi, carrying a sack of sweets and gifts for the baby. Although she never found them, she continues her journey every year, delivering gifts to children in the hope of finding the Christ child. La Befana’s Traditions •	Epiphany Celebrations: La Befana is celebrated most prominently on January 6th, marking the end of the Christmas season in Italy. Families gather to enjoy festive meals, and children eagerly check their stockings for her surprises. •	Gifts and Sweets: In homes across Italy, children hang stockings by the fireplace for La Befana to fill. Good children receive chocolates, candy, or small toys, while the naughtier ones might find coal—although even this is often made of sugar! •	A Warm Welcome: La Befana is believed to enter through the chimney, much like Santa Claus, and she’s known for being soot-covered from her journey. Families often leave out a glass of wine and a plate of food for her, as a gesture of gratitude. A Symbol of Renewal La Befana is more than just a folklore figure; she represents renewal and transformation. Her broom not only allows her to fly but also symbolizes sweeping away the past year’s troubles to make room for new beginnings. This heartwarming tradition is a reminder of the importance of generosity, reflection, and the magic of the holiday season. Even if you’re not in Italy, you can embrace the spirit of La Befana by spreading kindness, sharing treats, and starting the new year with a clean slate. Buona Epifania a tutti! #italy #befana #milano
