Translating everything for your students might feel like the easy way to help them… but it’s actually slowing them down… (and you too!) When students know they’ll get a translation, they have no reason to actively listen to the target language. The result?
🚫 Less motivation to use and understand the target language.
🚫 Delayed progress in building language skills. 🚫 They will feel excluded from the class Instead, focus on tiered scaffolding strategies aligned to their language levels which will that keep students engaged in the language. It will pay off in the long run when you put in the work and your students will thank you later. How do you prevent yourself and others from translating to your students? #palantemember #maestrabilingüe #duallanguage #duallanguageteacher #orallanguage #bilingualteacher #biliteracy #bilingualeducation #maestrabilingüe #duallanguageteacherproblems #newduallanguageteacher #translanguageing
Right now, dual language teachers need to keep it together, even when it feel hard. Things aren’t looking like they’ll get easier anytime soon—but that doesn’t mean we stop showing up for our students. It means we stay steady. We keep biliteracy instruction at the forefront. Because when everything else feels uncertain, our classrooms can be a place of consistency and connection for multilingual learners. Waiting on uncertainty and things we can’t control is only going to set your students back. They don’t have time for that, and neither do we. If you’re ready to keep teaching, keep pushing forward, and build a classroom where biliteracy stays the priority—join the waitlist for El Puente Sin Miedo Webinar. This is for K-3 dual language teachers who refuse to let this current political climate take over their classrooms and are committed to keeping instruction strong. #duallanguageteacher #duallanguage #maestrabilingüe #bilingualeducation #biliteracy #bilingualteacher #duallanguageteacherproblems #translanguageing #newduallanguageteacher #duallanguageteacherproblems
Building vocabulary for dual language students in elementary classrooms is all about making meaningful connections. Here’s where bridging comes in: 💡 When you show students how their knowledge in Spanish supports their learning in English (and vice versa), you’re helping them unlock deeper understanding and helps it stick. ✅ Teach them to spot cognates within words (naturaleza = nature).
✅ Highlight grammatical similarities and differences, like how both languages use suffixes to change word meanings.
✅ Use visual organizers to bridge ideas between the two languages. Bridging is the key to stronger metalinguistic awareness and confident biliteracy and should be incorporated into your instruction frequently. When students realize that their two languages need to work together, their growth will be exponential. Make bridging a priority in your classroom and watch your students and watch the magic happen. If you need help with how to incorporate bridging strategies into your lessons, I can help! #palantemember #maestrabilingüe #duallanguage #duallanguageteacher #orallanguage #bilingualteacher #biliteracy #bilingualeducation #maestrabilingüe #duallanguageteacherproblems #newduallanguageteacher #translanguageing

With everything happening in our world right now, our at-risk students need us to be their safe and stable space. 💛 They may not fully understand what’s going on, but they feel the weight of it. Teaching them to distinguish true from false is a powerful way to:
✨ Get them talking.
✨ Start important conversations.
✨ Ease their anxiety about what they’re hearing. Sometimes the best thing we can do is slow down, give them some tools to process and the space to share. ❤️ #duallanguage #duallanguageteacherproblems #biliteracy #duallanguageteacher #multilingualstudents #bilingualeducation
Looking back, I realize I was too hard on myself when I didn’t see the progress I hoped for. ✨ I used to think a quiet classroom meant I had great classroom management. 📚 I used to think centers were enough to teach reading. 🗣️ I used to tell students I didn’t speak English so I was unable to help them bridge. 🌟 I used to think kids would just pick up the language by being immersed. 🫠I didn’t know I was doing it wrong What they really needed was oracy, whole group instruction, bridging, and explicit instruction. And what I needed was to give myself more grace because I didn’t have anyone to support me❤️ If you need support with bridging routines or explicit instruction, follow because I can help. 🫶🏽 #duallanguageteacher #duallanguage #biliteracy #duallanguageteacher #maestrabilingüe #newduallanguageteacher #bilingualeducation
Do you know what cookies I’m talking about? IYKYK I always tell my students that these were my favorite cookies as a child. Growing up in New York, I shared these cookies with my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins every summer when I visited Puerto Rico. These cookies weren’t just a treat—they were a connection to my family, my culture, and my Puerto Rican heritage. It’s a story I share with my students to remind them that bilingualism is about more than two languages—it’s about celebrating who they are and where they come from. ❤️Want more ways to bring culture, connection, and biliteracy into your classroom? Dr. King’s dream wasn’t just about imagining justice and equity; it was about fighting for it. As dual language teachers, we have to be bold—bold enough to try new strategies, advocate for biliteracy, and teach our students to advocate for themselves. The work we do goes beyond instruction; it’s about building a future where every child’s language, culture, and identity are celebrated. Let’s dream big for ourselves and our students, take action, y vamos pa’lante como un elefante. You have to fight the urge to translate if you want your students to become strong readers and writers in two languages. Because, here’s the problem: Translation doesn’t build biliteracy. It keeps students dependent on YOU to make meaning and what happens when you are not around? Instead of translating, focus on bridging—the strategy that helps students: ✅ Make cross-linguistic connections ✅ Develop metalinguistic awareness ✅ Transfer knowledge between languages Want to learn how to ditch translation and start bridging effectively?
