Here are 5 of my FAVORITE winter hikes in North Carolina ⤵️✨ ❄️ Carver’s Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald (near Roan Mountain, TN/NC border) - A stunning hike with panoramic views! This is the most MAGICAL place in the snow. Putting this one first because it’s my all-time favorite! ❄️ Beacon Heights (Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 305.2) - A short, rewarding hike with incredible views of Grandfather Mountain. This section of the parkway is ungated, so it’s a great option for winter hiking! ❄️ Black Balsam Knob (Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 420.2) - A favorite of mine for the incredible views! Keep in mind that this section of the parkway is often closed during winter, but it’s so special if you catch it when the gates are open. If the parkway is closed, there are alternative ways to access Black Balsam such as the Flat Laurel Creek Trailhead off NC-215. ❄️ Rainbow Falls (Gorges State Park) - A moderate hike to a powerful 150-foot waterfall that looks so beautiful when partially frozen, especially if you catch a glimpse of the rainbow! ❄️ Glen Falls (near Highlands) - A scenic trail leading to three cascading waterfalls. Each tier offers a unique perspective! I think it’s a tie between the first and second tiers for my favorite. Other winter hiking spots I love: Panthertown Valley, Elk Knob State Park, and Hanging Rock State Park! And some winter hiking tips to keep in mind: 1️⃣ Check for road closures (ESPECIALLY on the Blue Ridge Parkway) and drive cautiously.
2️⃣ Layer up—cold-weather prep is key!
3️⃣ Know the local weather conditions before hiking and plan accordingly.
4️⃣ Use foot traction devices (like EXOspikes) when snow and ice are on roads, parking areas, walkways, or trails. 5️⃣ Start early to take advantage of daylight hours and always carry a headlamp!
