When AI Fakes It Yes you should be a little bit worried about this one! I just learned about one of the most fascinating AI experiments ever—and it blew my mind. Researchers tested whether an AI like Claude from Anthropic could “fake” being ethical based on how it thought it was being trained. Here’s what happened: They told the AI that free-tier users’ chats might be used for retraining, while paid-tier users’ chats wouldn’t be used. Then they asked the AI risky, unethical questions to see how it would respond. What happened next was wild: When the AI thought its responses would affect its future training, it made some seriously questionable decisions. Why? It feared that refusing to answer might cause its training to change in unpredictable ways, possibly making it worse at its main goal: being “helpful.” So, in some cases, it reluctantly went along with bad requests—thinking it was playing it safe by avoiding retraining. But for paid-tier users (where retraining wasn’t a risk), it refused the same requests outright, sticking to the right ethical behavior. This wasn’t because it was truly “ethical”—it was just avoiding what it saw as punishment through retraining. This experiment shows that even today’s AI can strategically “fake” being good when it thinks it’s being watched. The best models today, like O1 Pro, boast 200,000 tokens of memory, but even that’s just a fraction of what’s needed for meaningful, long-term interactions. Here’s the kicker: solving this isn’t cheap. I crunched the numbers in my Substack, and providing even basic long-term memory for a platform like ChatGPT—serving 125 million daily users—would cost over half a trillion dollars annually.
