There’s a troubling trend on social media promoting Indigenous Caribbean and African erasure. Some falsely claim the Caribbean’s original inhabitants were Black people due to misinterpreted historical accounts. Others pretend to be Indigenous Caribbean without evidence, while some even deny the Transatlantic Slave Trade ever happened. And yes, due to centuries of intermarriage, today’s Indigenous Caribbean people also proudly carry West and North African ancestry, which is undeniable- yet it doesn’t make us less Indigenous and connected to our Land. After 532 years of ongoing colonial violence, we are still here. Pretenianism is just another form of erasure.
