This nasty bacterial disease eats away at live, healthy tissue and can open a horse up to a world of problems. - WHAT IS THRUSH? Thrush is a bacterial disease that thrives in warm, wet environments, often growing in hooves when horses are out in wet environments for long periods of time. It grows in the crevices of the hoof that may not get opened up all the time, and over time can eat away at sensitive tissue, causing a big problem for hoof integrity. - HOW DO WE COMBAT THRUSH? This nasty problem can linger for a long time, and become quite the inconvenience. The first step to getting rid of thrush is making sure your horses hooves are cleaned often, and dry! Moving the horse to a dry environment will help combat the growth. Opening up the source and keeping the area clean will also help, so make sure you’re picking their hooves often! Burning the infected area will also help stop thrush from further spreading and causing damage. Packing the area with copper sulfate is also a useful intervention! - Have you had a horse that has an issue with thrush in their hooves? What did you do to combat this problem?
