If you can’t tell, I am of an era. If you have quite valuable cels, it’s definitely worthwhile to keep them in a portfolio book. Often when shopping even the ¥1600 cels are in portfolio books collected by studio, title, or like “CLAMP”. If you want to get into collecting cels, it’s better to shop on Japanese used platforms or better yet in Japan. Unfortunately we don’t get as high quality or decently preserved stuff in the US and it’s a lot more expensive. Like US-based vendors are often double or more for damaged stuff. If it’s something I really like (That Chibiusa nightmare!) I’ll go for it. But it really depends. None of my expensive cels are in great shape and none of my very well cared for cels are terribly expensive. So between that and my apartment basically not getting light, I don’t mind framing them and having them up. (This is also how I feel about displaying my older Lolita prints.) I’d have a different calculation in a sunnier space. I really love being able to own a piece of stories that were so special to me growing up. I try to collect my favorite characters where I can. And I’m def on the lookout for Fushigi Yuugi stuff, Tokyo Babylon (though that would be pricey) and more CLAMP School Detectives and Mokona. (I’d also love a Helios! But also that’s expensive!) —
