Everything around us holds an energy—even our clothes. What touches our skin, day in and day out, has a profound effect on our overall energy and well-being. That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of the fabrics we wear. The clothes we choose aren't just about style or comfort—they're an extension of our environment and can either uplift us or contribute to imbalances in our energy. I was shocked when I realized how much of my wardrobe was made from plastic. I talk often about microplastics and how they can infiltrate our food through cutting boards and packaging, but I think most people, myself included until recently, overlook how much of this material is in our clothes. Plastic fabrics can release harmful chemicals into our skin, including endocrine disruptors, which can interfere with our hormone systems. This can potentially lead to reproductive health problems, thyroid imbalance, and even increased risks for certain cancers. For those with sensitive skin, these chemicals can cause irritation, rashes, or allergic reactions. Synthetic fibers also trap heat and moisture against the skin, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. This can lead to uncomfortable skin conditions like acne, fungal infections, or eczema flare-ups. Over time, constant exposure to heat and moisture under synthetic fabrics can compromise the skin’s natural barrier, making it more vulnerable to environmental stressors. Additionally, washing synthetic fabrics releases microplastics into the water system, which marine life ingests and eventually ends up in our food chain. So, not only are we exposed to these chemicals through direct contact, but we’re also inadvertently ingesting plastic through our food and water. Once I learned all this, switching to natural fibers like wool, cashmere, and cotton felt like an obvious choice. They’re better for the environment and align with the energy I want to cultivate—clean, grounded, and supportive of my well-being. Choosing fabrics kind to our bodies supports a lifestyle of health, sustainability, and mindfulness. So here’s my takeaway for you: unsubscribe from the marketing that promotes synthetic fabrics, and make a conscious effort to choose natural fibers instead. Start looking at the fabric of an item before you add it to your cart. It’s a small change with a big impact on your health and the planet.
