The Weight of Compassion: Balancing Service and Self-Care in Crisis Response As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Business Psychology Consultant, I've learned that self-awareness isn't just important; it's essential for sustainable service. Yesterday, I responded to a devastating incident involving an infant. This morning, when called around 3:00 am to support those affected by yesterday's DC area plane crash, I consciously chose a less intensive site. This wasn't stepping back; it was stepping wisely. In crisis response work, where we hold space for others' trauma and tragedy, understanding and honoring our own emotional capacity isn't selfish; it's necessary. Our effectiveness depends not just on showing up but on being fully present. I'm grateful to have multiple expressive tools to help individuals, teams, groups, and organizations process trauma and enhance the depth and meaning of the experience. On an individual level, diverse approaches allow me to meet people where they are, making healing more accessible and meaningful even within an organizational setting. I LOVE providing this support, especially in critical times when it’s needed most. The strength to set boundaries is as crucial as the compassion to serve others. As professionals, especially those of us working in emotionally intensive and trauma-related fields, it is critical to recognize and respect our own limits.
