Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he was “very disappointed” by the Supreme Court’s decision Friday to uphold the federal law that bans TikTok in the U.S. by Sunday unless it’s sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. “I do believe that banning a social media app like TikTok is a violation of the First Amendment,” he said. “It’s just wrong for the government to ban it.” The Kentucky Republican said most of the reasons the government banned it were based on “accusations, not proof.” “I don’t think the battle’s over yet though,” he added. “I’m hopeful that President Trump coming in can have some ability — it sounds like Biden left the door open, perhaps, for some executive action from President Trump, and I hope that’s what will happen.” Watch more at c-span.org #randpaul #tiktok #tiktokban #cspan
President Trump signed an executive order on Monday night to delay enforcement of a federal ban on TikTok for 75 days. The order, signed in the Oval Office shortly after his inauguration, directs the attorney general to not take any enforcement action on the ban so that his administration can get “an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward.” The president told reporters “the U.S. should be entitled to get half of TikTok,” without going into detail. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, on Tuesday said he could not support former Fox News host Pete Hegseth to be the next Defense secretary. “Mr. Hegseth, I do not believe that you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job,” Sen. Reed said in his opening statement at Mr. Hegseth’s confirmation hearing. Sen. Reed cited allegations lodged against Mr. Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer, of sexual misconduct, excessive drinking, and financial mismanagement, among others. “I have voted in favor of all your predecessors, including those in the first Trump administration,” he said. “Unfortunately, you lack the character and composure and competence to hold the position of secretary of Defense.” Watch more at c-span.org #petehegseth #pentagon #dod #senate #cspan

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, urged President Trump to “have mercy” on immigrants and LGBTQ people in her sermon Tuesday at the National Prayer Service. “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives,” she said, directly addressing the president at the Washington National Cathedral. “They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, gurdwara and temples.” President Trump signed about 100 executive actions on his first day in office, some of which impact immigrants, LGBTQ individuals and minorities. One proclaimed that the U.S. government will only recognize two sexes, while another ordered the end of “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Several related to immigration, including ones that seek to end birthright citizenship, stop refugee admissions and send the military to the southern border. Rev. Budde asked the president to consider the human impact of his actions. “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away, and that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here,” she said. Jim Justice (R-WV) was sworn into the Senate on Tuesday after delaying his arrival on Capitol Hill to finish out his term as West Virginia governor. His swearing-in gives the upper chamber 99 members: 52 Republicans and 47 Democrats, with one vacancy resulting from Vice President-elect JD Vance’s (R-OH) resignation ahead of Inauguration Day. Sen. Justice delayed being sworn in to prevent a scenario in which the state would have had four governors over a span of two weeks due to state law that would have made the state senate’s president and his successor interim governors. Republican Patrick Morrisey, the former West Virginia attorney general, was sworn in as the new governor on Monday. Watch more at c-span.org #jimjustice #senate #cspan

President Biden delivered his farewell address to the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday night. He noted the importance of democratic institutions, including the courts and a free press, as he pledged to uphold a “peaceful, orderly transfer of power” and wished the incoming administration “success.” The outgoing president also warned about a “tech-industrial complex” and said “an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence.” Watch more at c-span.org #potus #joebiden #ovaloffice #cspan
President Trump on Monday night pardoned or commuted the sentences of all the 1,500-plus people criminally convicted for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The massive act of clemency follows through on a longstanding campaign promise to exonerate the rioters who he has repeatedly referred to as “political prisoners” and “hostages.” The president also ordered the Justice Department to seek the dismissal of about 450 pending cases. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) on Friday said the best way for TikTok to continue to exist is for it to be sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. “The problem with TikTok, from a national security perspective, is not the content of it, although people have raised concerns about it, and I have my own concerns. But that’s not why you ban it,” he told reporters. “Why you ban it is that it is controlled by Beijing.” The Supreme Court earlier in the day upheld the law that bans TikTok in the U.S. beginning Sunday unless it’s sold by ByteDance, making the wildly popular social media app’s future uncertain. “The president has the authority under the law to delay the sale or the ban, actually, by 90 days. I suspect President Trump will invoke that authority when he comes to office to allow a sale to go through,” Sen. Hawley said. Watch more at c-span.org #joshhawley #tiktok #tiktokban #cspan
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), the president-elect’s pick for secretary of State, pledged to promote “peace abroad and security and prosperity at home” during his confirmation hearing Wednesday. “How can America promote the cause of peace on earth if it is not safe at home?” he posed in his opening statement before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The senator criticized the “bipartisan consensus” on the world order based on free-market capitalism that took hold in the 1990s, calling it a “dangerous delusion” that hurt the middle class. “Here in America, and in many of the advanced economies across the world, an almost religious commitment to free and unfettered trade at the expense of our national economy shrunk the middle class, left the working class in crisis, collapsed our industrial capacity, and has pushed critical supply chains into the hands of adversaries and of rivals,” he told his colleagues. He specifically took aim at China, saying it took advantage of that new order by ignoring its obligations and instead “repressed and lied and cheated and hacked and stolen their way into global superpower status.” “The post-war global order is not just obsolete; it is now a weapon being used against us,” he said. “And all this has led to a moment in which we must now confront the single greatest risk of geopolitical instability and of generational global crisis in the lifetime of anyone alive and in this room today.” Watch more at c-span.org #marcorubio #statedepartment #secretaryofstate #senate #cspan
