Visiting Alaska is more than a trip—it’s a journey into the heart of Indigenous culture. Here’s how to ensure your visit celebrates and respects its rich heritage: Before you go: 📖 Learn about the land you’re visiting and its original inhabitants. Websites like AIANTA.org offer excellent starting points. 🔍 Research local customs and be mindful of sacred spaces. One such custom is always asking for permission before taking photos on Native lands. While you’re there: 🪶 Explore local events like the World Eskimo Indian Olympics in Fairbanks, from July 21 - 24, to witness traditional games and performances. 🏺 Support Native artists by buying authentic crafts and learning their stories. 🌌 Witness the magic of the Northern Lights. For many Alaskan Native communities, the aurora carries spiritual meaning—don’t hesitate to ask about its place in their traditions. A little preparation goes a long way in fostering understanding and respect. Let’s celebrate Indigenous cultures together! 🌍 📸: @❕Amanda❕ #VisitTheUSA #BookThatTrip #TravelAlaska #ExploreFairbanks  #NativeAmericanCulture #DiscoverNativeAmerica #AIANTA #AlaskaNative #Athabascan #CulturalTravel @Travel Alaska @Explore Fairbanks
They say the best way to learn a language is to live it.. so that’s exactly what I did. 🌎 Most Spanish immersion trips take place in big cities, where life moves fast, distractions are everywhere, and English speakers are within reach. But I wanted something different. I wanted to be fully immersed - to learn by doing, speaking, and by living in a place where conversations couldn’t easily slip back into the familiarity of English. 💬 I’ve lost count of the times I could’ve navigated in my second language but let embarrassment win. 🤦🏽‍♀️ San Carlos was that place for me. 📍 A small mountain pueblo where foreigners are few and Spanish is the only way to connect. Every day was an adventure - swimming in the rivers, hiking to waterfalls, cooking Colombian dishes, and dancing the night away at discotecas. 🏊🏽‍♂️🥾💃🏽🎶 Struggling through conversations, but feeling that spark of pride when I finally could understand or be understood. 😊 From the outside looking in, San Carlos seems like the perfect little mountain town. But, it also has a powerful story. Up until the early 2000s, the armed conflict in Colombia emptied these streets, forcing most residents to flee. And the scars of that time still linger on the hearts of those here, but so does something stronger: a community that rebuilt and reclaimed their home with color, connection, and culture. 💗 Learning a language isn’t just about the vocabulary, but it's also about the people, history, and the courage to keep speaking, even when you don’t get it perfect. And San Carlos gave me all of that and more. 🇨🇴✨ ---- #TravelCommunity #ColombiaTravel #visitcolombia #ExploreColombia #TravelColombia #SouthAmericaTravel #CulturalTravel #AuthenticTravel #igerscolombia #igcolombia #studyabroad #blacktravelfeed #blacktravelmovement #BlackGirlsTravel #essencetravels
