Next Ultimate 8-hour Whale Watch Trip is Sunday, January 26, 2025! A Fun Day with Fin Whales on today’s 8-hour Ultimate Whale Watch! After seeing several pods of Long-beaked Common Dolphin and a school of baby Mola molas, we were approaching the 14-mile bank. In the distance, we saw the tall blows of 2 Fin Whales ahead. To our port side were hundreds of Long-beaked Common Dolphin and sea birds feeding on anchovies. We watched in awe as one of these Fin Whales made several passes as it lunge fed across the surface rolling displaying its swollen ventral pleats and even its fluke! This whale seemed to leave the area only to be spotted once again a few miles away. This Fin Whale was in the MarEcoTel catalog ID 918 seen and sightings reported by Dana Wharf 13 times in recent years. Later in the day we had another wonderful sighting ~ an OlDana Point Harborrtle was spotted next to a kelp patty 20 miles from the Dana Point Harbor due east of Avalon! More Common Dolphin and feeding frenzies were seen on our return! #nobaddays #danawharfrocks SpeciaLaura Lopez Erin KeenGavriel Berghousefor the Fin Whale ID! Yesterday's life was found straight out and north of the Dana Point Harbor. Large pods of Long-beaked Common Dolphin were found less than 3 miles offshore early in the day. The largest of these pods was on our last trip off Emerald Bay including well over a thousand individuals. These dolphin were clearly feeding using various feeding techniques. Seen changing direction often, tail slapping the surface, simultaneously diving in groups to coral the bait fish driving it to the surface to compact it. Sea birds were trailing the dolphin with some flying through the air snatching the bait off the water's surface while pelicans were plunge diving to catch their prey. #nobaddays #danawharfrocks Report & 📸 Laura Lopez
