It’s officially 2025. Be sure to hit the ground running. I’m not huge on New Years. I can’t remember the last time I stayed up until midnight and I never have resolutions. Mainly the reason why is neither of those things are necessarily conducive to my goals. I’m big on fitness. The U.S. Army Reserve requires me to stay fit, as an Officer I need to set the example in that regard, and I also enjoy events like triathlons, 8/10ks, (a marathon once), as well as training Jiu-Jitsu. Since most of my workouts take place as the sun rises, staying up late for NYE would potentially hinder my progress. There is nothing wrong with a New Year’s resolution, so long as you follow through. But my position has always been if it’s truly important, why wait? Why wait until a new calendar year to pursue a goal or a dream? Why procrastinate? When I create a goal, I pursue it as soon as possible—that’s why I never have a resolution. My goals tend to carry over into the New Year as I always have one or two or three in mind. It’s the dichotomy between motivation and discipline again. We feel motivated on January 1st. It’s “new year new me” and that’s great. Ride that energy out as long as you can. But unless you get your discipline in order, come February you might begin feeling it all slip away. Don’t let that be you this year. Enjoy the motivating boost from the new year, but hone and maintain your capacity for self-discipline. Discipline is the attitude of “this needs to get done regardless of whether or not I feel like it.” Make 2025 your year!
