Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has spent part of her time in the Biden administration listening to what environmental and Indigenous activists want the government to do about climate change. As Haaland, the first Native American Cabinet secretary, prepares to leave office, she told PBS News’ Amna Nawaz that “the time is now” to continue on the fight against climate change, which includes transitioning to clean energy and listening to Indigenous voices about land management. “It's pretty certain that the climate crisis has caused irreparable damage in so many of these communities,” Haaland said. During the Biden administration, the Interior Department launched hundreds of co-stewardship agreements with tribes across the country for managing public lands. “People want their grandchildren to experience the beautiful world that people are experiencing today,” Haaland said. “This is a call from people across the country and certainly from our nation's Indian tribes” to continue to move forward.
