DIY Home Gym Cost Breakdown We knew we wanted to transform this taxidermy room into a home gym, but we wanted to do it in the most eco-friendly and cost-conscious way possible. This room needed a DEEP clean, and once it was fully sanitized with the drop ceiling removed, we painted the walls and the exposed joists and vents. This was a workout itself! Aside from the paint, everything else was purchased second hand, and the slightly blemished mats were a major win as was the $200 Peleton bike that I wheeled 25 blocks in NYC to Grand Central Station If you have the space, building out a second hand gym is well worth the upfront costs. Here is the full cost breakdown: $70 Lights $140 Paint $400 Olympic Weights $200 Peleton (WHAT A STEAL!) TBD on if we will use the membership $115 Barbell $35 Hexbar $235 Bowflex Adjustable Weights $450 Rack + Plates $460 Floor Mats $30 Bands $50 Kettlebell $2,185 TOTAL I'll probably put in another $800 worth of equipment, but even so, the cost savings compared to a traditional gym membership are significant. Average gym membership is $58 x 12 months x 2 people = $1,392 annually. The more people that use it, the more savings you get, and this doesn't even take into account the time saved commuting to the gym 🚗 . . .
