Let’s talk about subcision—one of the most effective treatments for deep, tethered acne scars, but also one of the most technically challenging. Subcision involves using a blunt cannula to release the fibrous bands that pull down the skin, creating indented scars. These bands form during the acne healing process and can remain stuck for years, making scars appear deeper and more noticeable. It’s important to understand that subcision isn’t something to be taken lightly. It needs to be performed at the correct layer of the skin, typically in the subcutaneous plane, to avoid complications and ensure the best results. If subcision is done too shallow, it won’t fully release the scar tissue. If it’s done too deep, it can affect other facial structures, which is why going to an expert is critical. As you can see in this video, I take a meticulous and gentle approach while applying just the right amount of pressure to safely release scars that have been tethered for many years. In some cases, after subcision, I use fillers like a blended form of Restylane to restore lost volume in areas affected by scarring. The combination of subcision and volume restoration helps to lift the skin naturally and create smoother, more balanced results. Subcision is a key step in treating deep acne scars, but it requires skill, precision, and a deep understanding of facial anatomy to achieve natural-looking, long-term results.
