In most scenarios, you will be playing on a kit that only has a single bass drum pedal. There are a few exceptions, however, being able to get the speed out of one pedal can be a valuable asset to your sound. Here is how I play quick/fast bursts on the bass drum. I try to keep my movements all ergonomic on the kit, so for my bass drum, I use one swift upward motion of my leg. It is kind of like a prep stroke, but for my foot. During that prep stroke, I let my ankle loose so I have zero tension going into the stroke, one my leg has been lifted, I tap my first note with just my ankle (see video). The second stroke naturally occurs as let go of my foot, and it strikes the pedal board again. I really use gravity as an assist. Gravity is a drummer’s best friend. I use this technique for all of my “double stroke” bass drum licks. What’s is your go to bass drum technique? Want some more FREE drumming tips? It’s no secret that drums can be a loud and overpowering instrument. I have been in many situations were I have “wanted” to play put, but simply could not due to the location and sound of the space. Honestly, the hardest part is playing music that in high in energy and demanding while maintaining control over your dynamics. Here are few methods I use to play to any room; 1. Brushes/Tala wands/Etc. Using an alternative to a drumstick is a quick and easy fix, which requires little to no change in technique/play style. Brushes are a fun way to add a unique texture into your sound at a low volume, and it obviously works great for jazz. Tala wands or hot rods are great as well, however, you do sacrifice a lot of articulation on the ride. Having these options on your back pocket is a must though so you can prepared for anything. 2. A Lighter Touch This seems easier said than done, but it has really helped me develop a soft and delicate touch. Practice playing a softer dynamic in the practice room next time. Try to replicate a groove that has lots of energy at a small dynamic. The biggest advice would be to just experiment with your technique and touch. Find the best way that YOU can achieve lots of energy in a small dynamic range. Want some more FREE drumming tips? Similar to how a wolf would patiently wait in the bush for their prey, sometimes the song calls for a patient drummer waiting for their moment. This mentality works very well with songs that have a really strong groove like RnB, Rock, Funk, or Soul. It’s no secret that the groove is king 👑 As drummers, and especially as the “Ultimate Jazz Drummer”, it is our duty to protect the sacred “groove” at all costs. What I try to do it really be patient with my self and wait for the opportunity to play my fill. There are sometimes where I might only play 1 or 2 fills for the whole song. If the song didn’t call for more, why play them? Understanding what the song needs should be the first priority of a drummer. We have so much power to change the energy of the music, and it’s our duty to use that power wisely. Want some more FREE drumming tips?
