Such a great song. Also I love this snare. It’s only $100 and it’s called The Kraken by PDP. This is a fun drum sound. The snare drum is so up front and has such a dry crunchy ghost note thing, but still opens up with a nice tone / roundness on the backbeats. It goes without saying that Chad Smith is one of the greatest drummers ever. His style is so raw and he’s one of those players that can be both a creative band member, and also a great session musician. I’ve always been interested in how he gets his hi hats to sound the way they do. It’s like they’re closed but still sloshy and open. They have so much breath and movement. I figured out it’s because of how extreme his left foot bounce is when he plays. Even when the hi hats are closed, he’s still opening them slightly almost always and the result is a ton of slosh and looseness. It’s super musical. This drum mix was a fun one. Pretty standard EQ and compression on most channels. There’s Soundtoys Radiator and some UADx Distressor on the drum bus to give it some top end excitement and life. Doing these videos has given me a renewed appreciation for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their music is timeless and so listenable without being stale or cheesy. For starters, I wanted to give credit where credit is due and shout out zhukovdrums for showing off this idea first. On the surface, this drum heck seems silly. However, this tends to be more helpful than one may think because most of the time, we never can get the perfect amount of slosh in our hi-hat sound on the first try. This simple yet effective drum hack allows you to set the spacing of your hats perfectly by simply putting a drumstick in between them. This drum hack takes the guessing out of the spacing between the two cymbals. After that, you adjust the height of the rod and lock down the clutch! It’s that simple. The only thing that took me a little time to get down was getting the rod to a proper height. To solve this, I lightly stepped down on the peddle until I reached the desired height. You can’t not hear the bass line. Love the drum parts in this song. Super deliberate and every drum fill is orchestrated and performed with a specific intention. It’s one drum performance from beginning to end that doesn’t change, super catchy and memorable. Early in my career I was doing a ton of auditioning. Most of the auditions were through a guy who recently passed away named Barry Squire. He was a great dude and I met a lot of the people I still work with today through him. Most of these auditions were cattle call style with sometimes up to 50-75 musicians auditioning on the same day. To make things easy, Barry had all of his musicians learn two songs, Hysteria by Muse (this song) and My Hero by the Foo Fighters. We all played those songs a million times in auditions, these drum parts and fills are forever burned in my memory. This was a fun drum mix. The snare is almost raw except for a tiny bit of EQ and some compression. The drums in this song have a really cool rawness to them that I wanted to maintain. The toms and kick have some basic EQ and I used parallel compression on the kick drum, snare, and toms to add some grit. I also have a super compressed floor mic tucked between my hi hat and snare drum that gets smashed with compression. That’s tucked in there also. Hugely influential band and really cool drum sounds. This might have been the first band I played on drums when I bought my first kit. Tre Cool and Green Day have had huge influence on my playing. Tre is a really special drummer. I’ve done a handful of sessions with his long time drum sounds / cartage guy Mike Fasano. Mike is a legend and is responsible for the drum sounds on a bunch of Green Day albums. We agreed that no one quite plays 8th notes like Tre. This song has monstrous drum sounds that sound like they were recorded in an airplane hangar. Huge open kick drum and big snare with a ton of crack and air, but no obnoxious ring. I had fun recreating this drum mix but didn’t quite feel I got where I wanted with it. Have you ever seen this done before? I know there is not just one way to do something, but there is a more effective way to do something like freshening up your drum heads. The first clip shown is one of toothpaste being used to clean off dirty drum heads, and although it worked, I’m sure it took a decent amount of time and effort to do it. In the second clip of me cleaning off a drum head with a magic eraser, you see that it requires effort but cuts the cleaning time down.
