2024 was one of the most gratifying and “successful” seasons I’ve had on Vinny yet, while simultaneously being the most frustrating & unsuccessful one as well. I’ve been saying all year that this is the first year it finally feels like Vinny is letting me train him, instead of just trying to stay on. We spent the year really fine tuning all three phases and feeling super in sync, confidently moving up to intermediate in early summer. It felt like we were making steady gains & improving all year, but we hit a road block in mid-August when all of a sudden Vinny started experiencing mild ataxia and was no longer gaining muscle, & instead losing it. Every time we ran into an issue I walked away saying “I don’t feel like he lost any confidence, just lost power & steering.” I just assumed the new level was making him sore, and after a thorough vet exam we were given the green light to keep pushing on. By October, my horse that already had two 2*L’s under his belt and was doing 40 minute trot sets in the spring, was struggling to make it through a 20-30 minute ride without feeling exhausted. In November, we were finally able to diagnose the problem with bloodwork & evaluation, confirming that he was positive with active EPM infection. Thankfully, Vinny is not stoic at all, and we caught it early all things considered, so he is currently under going treatment and should make a complete full recovery. 🙏🏼 I’m grateful that we trusted our gut when we knew something was wrong and continued to dig deeper for answers, and I’m hopefully optimistic that we will come out in 2025 feeling fighting fit and ready to build on our year. 🫶🏼💙 Thank you to everyone who has been along for the journey and who helped us get through this rocky year.
