Thank you for all the kind messages and support for Beau. The week took a turn after our trip to Iowa City. Very early in the morning on Thursday Beau developed a fever of over 104 - which is scary for anyone but when you have epilepsy, it’s even scarier. We took him to the ER. He had no symptoms of anything except a fever. Labs and a chest x-ray showed pneumonia. When a person is non-verbal and intellectually disabled - even when you have a communication device - he doesn’t know how to express or explain what is happening. We always have to put together a puzzle and watch any little changes in Beau’s mood or behavior. Thankfully Dr. Baker, nurse Jodi, and the rest of the ER staff at Allen Hospital in Waterloo were incredible. They knew exactly how to come to Beau’s level for care - as opposed to making him come to their level for care - if that makes sense. It kept him more calm and for that we are grateful. And now we wait for the sedated MRI to determine what is going on with his knee. No bouncing for a while from this sweet boy. A handful of times over the past 3 years, Beau’s right leg has quit working with very obvious signs of pain for him. He’s unable to put weight on that leg. It has always occurred when he was on the ground playing. He will suddenly cry out and then he’s unable to get up or put any weight on his leg. One of the times it happened 3 years ago, they did an inpatient EEG thinking that maybe his epilepsy and abnormal brain activity caused it, but nothing different showed up on his EEG. He is intellectually a toddler and doesn’t know how to explain it to us. I’ve torn my meniscus before and the way he is moving his knee and leg is very similar to the way mine acted. I hate to even think of surgery on this kid.
